After successful determination of the equivalence of your foreign professional qualification or receipt of the professional practice permit in Germany, your residence permit can be extended for a maximum of 12 months in order to search for a job.

If you have successfully had the equivalence of a foreign professional qualification determined or have obtained the professional practice permit, you can be granted a temporary residence permit to look for a job.

The residence permit will be issued directly following your previous recognition procedure. An extension of the residence permit is only possible if the maximum period was not exhausted when it was first issued. If you do not find a job during this period, an extension of the residence permit is not possible. You are then obliged to leave the Federal territory.

This residence permit allows unrestricted gainful employment.

• Proof of secure livelihood (e.g. employment contract and pay slips, bank statements, submission of a declaration of commitment by a third party)
• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of qualification (diploma, certificate or attestation from your training company or educational institution confirming successful completion of training)

You are already in possession of a residence permit for the purpose of seeking employment after a successful recognition procedure of your foreign professional qualification in the Federal territory, the maximum period of 12 months of which has not yet been exhausted.

Further general conditions for the granting of a residence permit are, in particular:

• a secure livelihood,
• a clarified identity,
• possession of a valid national passport.

Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee waiver may be considered.

You can only apply for a residence permit in person at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:

• Depending on the foreigners authority and your concerns, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
• If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office.
  During the appointment, your application will be received and your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment). For the renewal of the electronic residence permit (eAT card) your fingerprints will be taken.
• In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your application to schedule an appointment at the Aliens' Registration Office. During the appointment, your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the renewal of the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
• If your application is granted, the Aliens' Registration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be produced.

• There are fees for the extension of the residence permit. The timing and form of payment vary depending on the authority.
