You can extend your residence permit to pursue qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training before the expiration of its time limit if you want to continue employment in Germany as a skilled worker.

The residence permit for qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training is a temporary residence title. You can apply for the extension of the residence permit for the purpose of qualified employment if your employment is to be continued beyond the period of validity of your residence permit.

Apply for the extension of your residence permit at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence at least eight weeks before the expiry of the time limit.

For the extension of the residence permit for the purpose of qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training, the same requirements apply as for the granting. In particular, you should be able to present a concrete job offer or an employment contract and pursue employment that is professionally related to your qualification.

If you were required to attend an integration course when your residence permit was first issued, this will be taken into account when your residence permit is extended. If you have not yet taken part in an integration course, the Foreigners' Registration Office may reject your application for an extension of your residence permit. If you have not yet completed the integration course, your residence permit will generally only be extended for one year at a time until you successfully complete the course or provide proof that you have been integrated into social life in some other way.

In the case of an extension, your residence permit will be limited again. The residence permit for qualified employment for skilled workers with vocational training is extended for the duration of the employment contract.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already ruled out when the residence permit was issued or last extended.

• You have a concrete job offer or an employment contract with the same or another employer.
• You are engaged in employment that is professionally related to your qualifications.
• If required, you have a professional practice permit.
• The Federal Employment Agency has approved your taking up employment (approval is usually obtained from the Foreigners' Registration Office) For approval, your working conditions (in particular salary) must be comparable to those of a German employee in the same position, among other things.

Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee waiver may be considered.

The extension of your residence permit must be applied for at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence.

• If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office.
