If you have a temporary residence permit for mobile researchers and would like to continue your work at the research institution in Germany after the expiration of the time limit, you can extend your residence permit under certain conditions.

The residence permit for the purpose of research for mobile researchers is a temporary residence title. You can apply for the extension of the residence permit if you want to continue your work at a research institution beyond the period of validity of your residence permit.

Apply for the extension of your residence permit at the Foreigners' Registration Office responsible for your place of residence at least eight weeks before the expiry of the time limit.

For the extension of the residence permit for the purpose of research, the same requirements apply as for the granting. In particular, you should be able to present a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution.

In case of extension, your residence permit will be limited again. The residence permit for the purpose of research will be extended for the duration of the research project. However, the stay in the federal territory may not exceed one year in total.

As a rule, the residence permit cannot be extended if this was already ruled out when the residence permit was issued or last extended.

• You possess a recognized and valid passport or passport replacement as well as the valid residence permit for the purpose of research for mobile researchers according to § 18f Residence Act.
• There is no interest in deportation against you.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without recourse to public benefits.
• You can present a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution to carry out the research project

Under certain circumstances, a fee reduction or fee waiver may be considered.

The extension of your residence permit must be applied for at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence.

• Depending on the foreigners authority and your request, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
• If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office.
• During the appointment, your application will be received and your supporting documents will be reviewed (please bring them to the appointment). Your fingerprints will be taken for the issuance of the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
• In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to make an appointment for an interview at the Aliens' Registration Office. During the appointment, your supporting documents will be checked (please bring them to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the issuance of the eAT card.
• If your application is granted, the Aliens' Registration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be produced.
• After about six to eight weeks, you can pick up your eAT card at the Aliens' Registration Office.

There are fees for the extension of the residence permit. The timing as well as the form of payment varies depending on the authority

An appeal against the decision of the Foreigners' Registration Office may be filed with the court specified in the decision.

• Residence permit for the purpose of research for mobile researchers can be extended if its period of validity expires in the near future and the activity at the research institution is to be continued.

• In the course of the extension, the residence permit will be limited again.
• An extension is excluded if this was already ruled out by the foreigners authority when the permit was granted or the last extension was granted.
• Depending on the foreigners authority and the request, the application is possible via the Internet or only in person.
• Fees:
  • For a further stay of up to three months: EUR 96
  • for a further stay of more than three months: EUR 93
  • Under certain conditions a fee reduction or fee exemption can be considered.
