You would like to discharge wastewater into a private wastewater system and be exempted from the permit requirement? Then an application for exemption from the permit requirement must be submitted to the competent authority of the respective federal state.

For the discharge of wastewater (industrial wastewater, commercial wastewater) into a private wastewater facility (indirect discharge), an exemption from the permit requirement can be applied for in Germany, provided that compliance with the legal requirements is ensured by contract with the operator of the private wastewater facility. Exemption from the permit requirement is granted by the competent authorities of the individual countries.

For those industries and activities (such as chemical industry, paper production, metal processing, cooling water use) where pollutants are to be expected in the wastewater that are not sufficiently treated in a municipal wastewater treatment plant, the legislator has laid down requirements in the industry-specific annexes to the Wastewater Ordinance.

To comply with these requirements, special measures and wastewater pretreatment facilities are needed to reduce the pollutant load in such a way that the wastewater can then be treated without harm in a public or private wastewater treatment plant.

The required documentation depends on the wastewater (industrial wastewater, commercial wastewater) to be discharged into the private wastewater system.

Required in any case:

The permit requirement can be waived upon application if compliance with the legal requirements is ensured by contract with the operator of the private wastewater system.

An administrative fee must be paid to the respective federal state for the administrative service of the permit. The administrative fee is based on the respective state law provisions on administrative fees.

The processing time depends on the quality and volume of the applications and documents submitted.

The application must be submitted at an early stage, since wastewater may only be discharged into a private wastewater system if an exemption from the permit requirement has been granted.

An appeal against the approval may be lodged within one month of notification.
