As a researcher, you can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of research under certain conditions
You can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of research if you are recognized as a beneficiary of international protection or a beneficiary of international protection in an EU member state and have resided in this state for at least two years after being granted protection.
The residence permit for the purpose of research for beneficiaries of international protection is a temporary residence title. It is issued for the duration of the research project.
The residence permit entitles the holder to take up research activities at the research institution designated in the hosting agreement and to take up teaching activities. Changes in the research project during the stay do not lead to the lapse of this entitlement.

- You have the status of a beneficiary of international protection or a beneficiary of international protection in another EU member state where you have resided for at least 2 years after the granting of the protection status.
- A declaration of cost absorption from the research institution is available.
In principle, the research institution must undertake in writing to assume costs incurred by public bodies up to six months after termination of the hosting agreement or contract. These include the costs of the foreigner's subsistence during an unauthorized stay in an EU member state and for deportation. In certain cases, the declaration of assumption of costs is not required. Please contact your competent foreigners authority in this regard.
- You can secure your livelihood and health insurance coverage from your income without claiming public benefits.
The residence permit must be applied for at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:
- Depending on the foreigners authority and your request, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
- If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office. During the appointment, your application will be received and your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment). For the production of an electronic residence permit (eAT card) your fingerprints will be taken.
- In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Aliens' Registration Office, if necessary. During the appointment, your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the production of the electronic residence permit (eAT- card).
- If your application is approved, the Aliens' Registration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be produced.
- After about six to eight weeks, you can collect the eAT card from the Aliens' Registration Office.
- The eAT card must always be collected in person.
Fees are charged for the issuance of the residence permit. The timing and form of payment varies depending on the authority.
- Application for a residence permit for the purpose of research for beneficiaries of international protection: at the latest eight weeks before the expiry of your still valid visa.
- Action deadline: 1 month
An appeal against the decision of the Foreigners' Registration Office may be filed with the court specified in the decision.
- Residence permit for the purpose of gainful employment, issued to researchers who are recognized as refugees or similar in another EU member state.
- Foreigners who have concluded a hosting agreement or a corresponding contract with a research institution for the purpose of carrying out the research project in Germany and who are recognized in another EU member state as being entitled to international protection and who have resided in this EU member state for at least two years after being granted protection may be granted a residence permit for the purpose of research.
- The residence permit entitles the holder to take up research activities at the research institution designated in the hosting agreement and to take up teaching activities.
- The residence permit for the purpose of research for beneficiaries of international protection is a temporary residence title. It is issued for the duration of the research project.
- Holders of a residence permit for the purpose of research can obtain a settlement permit after fulfilling certain requirements.
- Spouses of holders of a residence permit for the purpose of research are also entitled to a residence permit.
- Depending on the foreigners authority and the request, the application can be made via the Internet or in person.
- A fee is charged for the issuance of the residence permit. The time as well as the form of payment varies depending on the authority.
