You can have your electronic identity card blocked if you have lost it or it has been stolen.
The ID card holder must immediately report the loss (loss, theft) of the ID card for blocking the online ID card function to the blocking hotline or to the ID card authority in order to rule out misuse.
It is important to note that although no one can read your data without your PIN, the blocking ensures that any attempt at misuse is detected immediately.
If you recover your ID card, you can have the blocking lifted at the ID card authority. This can only be done in person. Unblocking is not possible by telephone.
For blocking, you need the blocking information specified in the PIN letter, in particular the blocking password.
- German national within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law (GG)
- Registered in the municipality with main residence
The blocking is carried out in person via the ID card authority or by telephone via the blocking hotline and is initiated immediately.
At the same time, the ID card authority informs the police about the loss of the ID card.
The personal blocking password is required to call the blocking hotline (you were informed of this in the PIN letter).
If you do not have this password, you can ask for it at the ID card authority where you applied for your ID card. This requires your personal appearance and proof of identity.
If the eID function is blocked via the hotline, you are also required to report the loss to the ID card authority.
If you recover your ID card, you can have it unblocked at the ID card office. This can only be done in person. Unblocking is not possible by telephone.
