If you need weapons or ammunition as a customary shooter for customary purposes, you must apply for a permit to do so.

If you are a traditional shooter and require weapons and ammunition for your traditional shooting, a need for their acquisition and possession is recognized. The permit is limited to single-shot long guns and up to three bolt-action long guns and the ammunition intended for them. As proof, you need a certificate from the traditional shooting association that you need these weapons to maintain the tradition. An indication of customs is a long-standing tradition and practice. In this context, the use of weapons may only be a necessary part of the cultivation of customs and not the predominant purpose.

• You have reached the age of 18.
• You are reliable within the meaning of the Weapons Act.
• You are personally suitable within the meaning of the Weapons Act.
• You are competent within the meaning of the Weapons Act.
• You have a need within the meaning of Section 16 of the Weapons Act.

The weapons authority charges a fee in accordance with No. 1.1 of the Annex to the Thuringian General Administrative Costs Regulations.

You can obtain the permit in the following way:

• You make an application and submit the required documents
• the required documents are checked, if necessary you have to submit further required documents,
• your age, reliability, personal suitability, expertise and need are checked (§ 4 paragraph 1 numbers 1 to 4 WaffG)
• the decision under weapons law is made.
