You can obtain a residence permit to attend school if you meet certain requirements for this purpose

As a rule, they can only obtain a residence permit to attend general school from the 9th grade onwards. In exceptional cases, the residence permit can also be issued for attendance at a lower grade level.

The residence permit for general school attendance is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for the duration of school attendance.

During the stay for school attendance, a change of purpose of stay is generally only possible in cases of a claim for the issuance of another residence title.

• Proof of health insurance
• Proof of school attendance in Germany (for example, by submitting a certificate from the school to be attended)
• If you have not yet reached the age of 18, the consent of the person(s) authorized to take care of the person(s) for the planned stay in Germany.

• You have a recognized and valid passport or passport replacement and - if required for entry - an appropriate visa.
• There is no interest in deportation against you.
• Attending school is the main purpose of your stay in Germany.
• Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
• The school to be attended in Germany is a
  • a public or state-recognized school with an international orientation or
  • a school which is not or not predominantly financed by public funds and which prepares pupils for international qualifications, qualifications from other countries or state-recognized qualifications.
• A composition of students of different nationalities is ensured in the school class.

• The deviations are possible due to agreements of the states with public bodies in other states on the attendance of domestic schools by foreign students.

• If you have not reached the age of 18: the persons authorized to have custody of you have agreed to your stay in Germany.
• Your livelihood is secured for the entire duration of your school attendance in Germany.

Issuance of residence permit: EUR 100.00

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be considered.

The residence permit must be applied for at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:

• If you have not yet reached the age of 18, you may not submit the application yourself. The application must be submitted by the legal representatives (usually by the parents with joint custody or one parent with sole custody.) or other persons who care for you in Germany in place of the legal representatives.
• Depending on the foreigners authority and your concerns, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic application for the residence permit.
• If the application is only possible in person, make an appointment with the Aliens' Registration Office. You must be accompanied at the appointment by at least one legal representative or another person who is looking after you in Germany in place of the legal representative if you have not yet reached the age of 18.

During the appointment, your application will be received and your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment). For the production of an electronic residence permit (eAT), your fingerprints will be taken.

• In the case of an electronic application, the Aliens' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Aliens' Registration Office if necessary. You must be accompanied at the appointment by at least one legal representative or another person who is looking after you in Germany in place of the legal representative if you have not yet reached the age of 18.

During the appointment, your supporting documents will be checked (bring them with you to the appointment) and your fingerprints will be taken for the production of the electronic residence permit (eAT).

If your application is granted, the Aliens Department will arrange for the eAT to be produced.

After about six to eight weeks, the eAT can be picked up at the Aliens' Registration Office.

Fees are charged for the issuance of the residence permit. The timing and form of payment vary depending on the authority.

• The persons entitled to personal care must agree to the planned stay for school attendance if the applicant has not yet reached the age of 18.
• The residence permit for school attendance does not entitle the holder to gainful employment.
• Depending on the foreigners authority and the request, the application can be made via the Internet or in person.
• A fee is charged for the issuance of the residence permit. The time as well as the form of payment varies depending on the authority.
