You can apply for an extension of your residence permit due to a ban on deportation.

Your residence permit was issued for at least one year. It can be extended if the ban on deportation and the other conditions for issuance are met.

You must urgently ensure that you submit an application for the extension or issuance of another residence title (for example, a settlement permit) before the expiry of your residence title.

If the application is filed in time, i.e. before the expiration of the time limit, the further stay is considered permitted until the decision of the Aliens Department with all subsequent effects (for example, the right to pursue gainful employment). A late application (after the end of the time limit stated in the residence title) can result in considerable legal disadvantages.

As a rule, you must apply for the extension of your residence title in person at the aliens' registration office responsible for your place of residence.

If your application is approved, the Aliens' Registration Office will commission the Federal Printing Office to produce the electronic residence permit (eAT) in the form of a check card with a new validity date.

You will usually be informed of the duration of the procedure (about 6 to 8 weeks) when you apply for an extension by the competent foreigners authority.

Settlement permit can be issued after five years upon application and if the requirements are met.
