If the validity of your driver's license has expired, you must apply for a new license.

Driving licenses issued as of 19.01.2013 are limited to 15 years.

The validity of a driving license issued before 19.01.2013 is governed by Annex 8e to the Driving License Ordinance.

If the validity of the driver's license has expired, a new driver's license must be applied for, unless you renounce the driver's license.

However, the time limit only affects the driver's license document, not the underlying driver's license. No medical examination or other verification is associated with the document exchange.

The rights documented in the driver's license remain valid even if the document is exchanged. The individual driver's license classes that are assigned when a driver's license is exchanged are governed by Annex 3 of the Driver's License Ordinance.

• Photo ID (identity card or passport (if passport is presented: attach a current registration certificate from the registration office responsible for the main place of residence)).

The fee is based on the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt).

Driving licenses issued up to and including December 31, 1998:

Year of birth of the driver's license holder - Date by which the driver's license must be exchanged.

Before 1953 - January 19, 2033

1953 to 1958 - January 19, 2022

1959 to 1964 - January 19, 2023

1965 to 1970 - January 19, 2024

1971 or later - January 19, 2025

Driver's licenses issued on or after January 1, 1999*:

Year of issue - date by which driver's license must be exchanged.

1999 to 2001 - January 19, 2026

2002 to 2004 - January 19, 2027

2005 to 2007 - January 19, 2028

2008 - January 19, 2029

2009 - January 19, 2030

2010 - January 19, 2031

2011 - January 19, 2032

2012 to January 18, 2013 - January 19, 2033

(*Driver's license holders whose year of birth is prior to 1953 must exchange their license by January 19, 2033, regardless of the year the license was issued)
