If your marriage or civil partnership is dissolved, you may resume your previously used surname or maiden name. However, you can also prefix or append your birth name or previously used surname to the name you acquired through the marriage or civil partnership.

• final judgment on divorce or dissolution of civil partnership, or
• Death certificate of the spouse/life partner

The submission of a declaration of name change after the dissolution of marriage or civil partnership costs € 25.00 in Thuringia. A marriage certificate showing the name change costs € 10.00.

• You can submit the declaration of name change at any registry office. The validity of the submitted declaration is checked by the registry office of the marriage, which also issues a certificate or document about the name change.
• To submit the name declaration, you must appear in person at the registry office.

• If the birth name or name used prior to marriage or civil partnership was not a family name (married name or civil partnership name), the birth name or name used until the married name/life partnership name was designated may be readopted.
