If you are a sworn interpreter or authorized translator on a temporary and occasional basis, you can apply to be entered in the register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators.

Interpreters and translators who are legally established in another member state of the European Union, in another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in Switzerland as sworn interpreters or authorized translators or with a comparable activity and who wish to exercise this activity in Thuringia on a temporary and occasional basis will be entered in the register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators upon application.

If neither the activity nor the training for this activity is regulated in the country of establishment, this only applies if the applicant has exercised the activity in one or more of the aforementioned countries for at least one year during the previous ten years.

Registration shall be made by naming the appointing or recognizing authority of the country of establishment with the professional title that exists for the activity in the language of the country of establishment. Interpreting or translation services may only be provided under the registered professional title. The registration shall indicate that the interpreter or translator is not generally sworn or authorized in Thuringia.

The registration expires after twelve months if it is not reapplied for.

• a certificate stating that the applicant is legally established in another member state of the European Union or state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or Switzerland for the purpose of exercising one of the activities specified in Section 15 of the Thuringian Act on the Implementation of the Judicial Constitution Act or a comparable activity and that he/she is not prohibited, even temporarily, from exercising this activity at the time the certificate is submitted,

• a certificate of professional qualification,

• if the profession or training for this profession is not regulated in the country of establishment, proof that the applicant has lawfully practiced the activity there for at least one year during the previous ten years,

• indication of the professional title under which the activity is to be performed in the country of establishment

All documents must be submitted in the original or in officially certified form. As a rule, the documents must be submitted in German. If the documents are not in German, a translation may also be required. Please contact the president of the competent regional court for this.

A fee of EUR 30.00 is charged for the procedure for entry in the register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators for temporary work.

Anyone who is legally established as a sworn interpreter or authorized translator or with a comparable activity in a member state of the European Union, in another state party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or in Switzerland and wishes to exercise this activity in Thuringia temporarily and occasionally can be entered in the register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators upon application. The entitlement to the procedure is not tied to nationality, origin of the degree or residence status. The application can also be made from abroad.

A written application must be submitted to the president of the competent regional court. The application can be submitted informally without an application form.

It must be accompanied by proof of legal establishment. Recognition of a foreign qualification is not required.

If all requirements are met, entry is made in the register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators.

No deadlines need to be observed.

Interpreters who are not generally sworn may also be called upon to attend court hearings. However, the interpreter must then be sworn in by the presiding judge before commencing work.

The presidents of the regional courts in Thuringia maintain a joint electronic list of their sworn interpreters and authorized translators. The list is published on the Internet within a cross-state database of interpreters and translators. The data will only be published in the Internet directory if the applicant has given his/her consent. This consent can be revoked at any time. The revocation must be declared in writing to the president of the competent regional court. If the applicant does not consent to the publication of personal data in the online public directory, the data will only be made available to the Thuringian courts and public prosecutors' offices in a protected area. In this case, the Thuringian notaries receive up-to-date directories on a regular basis.

Legal remedies are available against the decision of the competent authority on the application or against a decision that was not made in due time in accordance with the Administrative Court Code (objection procedure, if necessary legal action).
