The legal basis for issuing a type test report is provided by the Thuringian Building Code (ThürBO) and the Thuringian Ordinance on Test Engineers and Test Experts (ThürPPVO).

Structural installations or parts of structural installations that are subject to mandatory inspection and that are erected or used in the same design at several locations must be inspected by an inspection authority with regard to their stability.

If structural systems and load-bearing structures are to be erected or used at several locations in Germany on the basis of applicable technical building regulations, in the same design and as often as required, applying for a type test is often an effective procedure. In this case, it is not necessary to check the stability certificates individually for each new application. The building supervisory authority responsible for a project only has to determine the conformity of the design with the test report and the type plans for the individual case. Type tests are valid throughout Germany.

The applicant must submit two copies of the structural verifications of all types under consideration as well as the type plans and type sheets prepared to illustrate the calculation results for examination.

Insofar as the documents submitted comply with the structural engineering regulations - the Thuringian Administrative Regulation on Technical Building Regulations (ThürVVTB) or the certificates of usability issued by the building authorities - a test report will be issued by the test office, which may contain additional information and notes that go beyond the content of the type plans. You will then receive a copy of your tested structural engineering documents and the test report together with the annexes (usually the type plans/sheets required for execution).

The processing time and the resulting type examination fee are heavily dependent on the scope and quality of the documents submitted and therefore cannot be quantified in general terms. In principle, the following applies: Carefully prepared documents make subsequent corrections unnecessary and thus reduce the time required for the examination and therefore also the examination fee incurred.

The type test report can be issued for a maximum period of validity of five years. Within this period, the tested type statics can be used as often as required.

After expiry of the validity period, it is possible to apply for an extension. Provided that technical building regulations have not changed within this period and the applicant does not intend to make any individual adjustments to the type with regard to its application and design, there is generally nothing to prevent a short-term extension for a maximum of five further years.

An extension is only possible if the application is submitted before the deadline expires.

Any arrangements made in advance can help to reduce the processing time of the inspection and the resulting fee for you.

Type plans/sheets must be prepared in such a way that they describe the design completely and clearly and serve as a basis for manufacture and execution. All dimensions, materials and application regulations must be presented clearly and unambiguously in such a way that they can be assigned to the corresponding type for each individual case. The tested mathematical verification is generally no longer required when the construction is used.

We recommend commissioning structural engineers who already have experience with type testing to prepare the documents.

The design of structures or constructions on the basis of tests is not permitted for type tests.

Type tests for structural systems or parts of structural systems are reserved exclusively for the testing authorities for stability. In Thuringia, this is the responsibility of the Building Inspection/Building Technology Department at the Thuringian State Administration Office.

The application must be submitted informally in writing, stating the subject of the application and naming the author of the structural engineering documents.
