Health assistance (benefits of the 5th chapter of the Twelfth Book of the Social Code - SGB XII) corresponds to the benefits of the statutory health insurance. They are only provided if these or other eligible service providers do not provide them and the person concerned is in need.
The following can be considered as health assistance
- Preventive health assistance (preventive services)
- Assistance in case of illness (medical treatment)
- Help with family planning
- Assistance in pregnancy and maternity
- Assistance with sterilization
Health assistance also includes subsidies for needy persons not covered by statutory health insurance for inpatient or partially inpatient care in hospices. Since January 1, 2017, the benefits of preventive care, reimbursement of expenses for the contributions of a caregiver or a special caregiver for adequate old-age insurance, assumption of the costs of counseling for the caregiver and assumption of the reasonable costs of ensuring home care under an employer model for care levels 2 to 5 (Other benefits) are included in the benefits of assistance for health, insofar as this is not otherwise ensured. Special feature: Assistance during pregnancy and maternity (according to SGB XII)
If there is no entitlement to basic support for jobseekers (unemployment benefit II), those affected may be able to receive social assistance benefits during their pregnancy and in the first period afterward within the framework of assistance during pregnancy and maternity (according to SGB XII).
This assistance includes - as in the case of statutory health insurance - the following
- Medical treatment and care as well as midwifery assistance,
- Provision of medicines, dressings and remedies,
- care in an inpatient facility and
- home care services.
The entitlement arises as soon as the competent body becomes aware of the emergency situation. The persons concerned are free to choose the doctor or the inpatient facility (except for non-approved birth centers).

The competent social assistance institution shall provide information on the documents required in individual cases.
Health aid is also provided to persons who do not have statutory or sufficient private health insurance and who cannot reasonably be provided with the necessary aid from income and wealth.
