When transporting animals, the requirements of Regulation (EC) No. 1/2005 on the protection of animals during transport (EU Animal Welfare Transport Regulation) and the national Animal Welfare Transport Regulation of February 11, 2009 must be observed in particular. The ordinances regulate the handling of animals during loading, the space required and the provision of care for the animals during transportation, as well as the duration of transportation.
For animals that are not used to being transported, in particular, every journey is a burden. This is especially true if the usual care times are exceeded. The aim must therefore be to prepare the animals individually for transportation and to adapt the duration of transportation to the needs of the animals.
Anyone who transports animals must be appropriately trained or qualified. Persons transporting farm animals by road over a distance of more than 65 kilometers also require a certificate of competence. The certificate of competence is mandatory. The persons concerned must have successfully completed a training course and passed an examination.
According to Article 10 of EU Regulation (EC) 1/2005, farmers who transport their own animals in their own vehicles to breeding shows, animal exhibitions, auctions, markets etc. over a distance of more than 65 kilometers must also be licensed as transporters. Farmers must provide evidence of sufficient and appropriate equipment for this purpose. The equipment includes so-called livestock trailers and other means of transportation.
