Proof of professional suitability for translating or interpreting for judicial, official and notarial purposes is an indispensable requirement for all persons intending to apply for a public appointment and general swearing-in.
The proof of the professional qualification can be provided
- by completing a course of study as an interpreter or translator or as a graduate language mediator at a German university or college
- by an educational qualification obtained abroad and recognized as equivalent, or
- by passing a state non-university examination.
Admission to the examination requires at least a Mittlerer Bildungsabschluss and several years of training as an interpreter or translator in the language to be examined or several years of relevant professional experience.
Those who have passed the examination are entitled to use the professional title "State-certified interpreter" or "State-certified translator".
A certificate is issued on passing the examination, which serves as proof of professional qualification to the body responsible for the public appointment and general swearing-in.

- officially certified copies of school and other educational certificates (If the documents were issued in a foreign language, a certified translation into German must be enclosed in addition to the officially certified copy).
- officially certified copies of diplomas or certificates as proof of knowledge of specified subjects.

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern the following fees apply:
- Translator and interpreter examination EUR 490.00
- Translator examination EUR 400,00
- Interpreter examination after passing the translator examination EUR 292.00
- Non-admission to the examination EUR 40.00
The application for the next examination date can only be submitted between August 15 and September 15 (date of receipt) of each year.

The Examination Office for Interpreters and Translators in the Teacher Examination Office of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is responsible for conducting the examination procedure and for the recognition of foreign educational qualifications.
