Training in the field of psychological psychotherapy includes a state examination. Proof of passing the examination is a prerequisite for licensure as a psychological psychotherapist. Admission to the examination is granted on application. Training to become a psychological psychotherapist takes at least three years full-time and at least five years part-time. It consists of a theoretical part, practical training with patient treatment under supervision and self-awareness and concludes with a state examination. This comprises a written and an oral part.

The application for admission to the psychotherapeutic examination must be accompanied by the following documents in the original or as a certified copy:

1. proof of identity,
2. proof of higher education entrance qualification and, in the case of certificates obtained abroad, also the letter of recognition from the competent authority under state law
3. an overview of the coursework and examinations completed by the examination candidate in the Bachelor's degree program
4. the Bachelor's certificate and, if available, the statement that the professional requirements have been met
5. the notification of a degree equivalent to the Bachelor's degree, if no Bachelor's certificate according to number 4 is available
6. the overview of the coursework and examinations completed by the examination candidate in the Master's degree program
7. the Master's certificate, which certifies the successful completion of the Master's course of study in accordance with §§ 7 and 9 of the Psychotherapists Act

You can take the state examination if you have taken part in full-time or part-time training at one of the approved institutes.

You must register in writing for the state examination as a psychological psychotherapist. Use the prescribed form for this. Submit your application with the required documents to the State Examination Office for Health Professions.

The application must be received by the responsible office by December 10 in a winter semester or by May 10 in a summer semester. It can be submitted at the earliest six months before the next examination date, but not before the last semester of the Master's degree program.
