If your address changes, you must also have your address changed on the chip of your eID card.
If you have a home in Germany, the change of address on your eID card will be made by the registration authority responsible for you at your main place of residence together with the registration of your new home.
If you do not have a home in Germany, the diplomatic mission abroad in whose district you usually reside is responsible for changing your address abroad.
Your address will only be changed on the chip of your eID card because no address is printed on the card itself.
The eID card does not become invalid because the current address is not stored on the chip.

- when moving into a rented property: confirmation from the landlord or corresponding allocation feature
- if moving into residential property: notarized purchase contract or extract from the land register
- for persons under guardianship: written power of attorney or guardian's certificate
- if represented by another person: written power of attorney and identification documents of the person to be registered, if applicable
- if moving from abroad: last residential address in Germany
- for spouses, life partners and family members with the same move dates: Date of moving in as well as previous and current residences
- The competent authority may request the submission of further documents to verify the information (e.g.: marriage certificate, birth certificate).
The change of address on the chip of the eID card is carried out as part of the registration or deregistration of a residence, which you can do either in person or online.
You appear in person at the registration office responsible for you:
- You present all the necessary documents.
- You register or deregister your place of residence.
- The address is then changed on the chip of the eID card.
For electronic residence registration:
- You call up the online service.
- You log in to the online service with your user account.
- You enter all the required data online and submit the form online.
- You will receive a code by post to your new address.
- You confirm that you have moved into your new home by entering the code in the online service.
- You will receive an official registration confirmation.
- You present this official registration confirmation and your valid eID card to the relevant registration authority.
- The registration authority will then change your address on the chip of your eID card free of charge.
