If you want to study at a university, you need a university entrance qualification (for example, Abitur). You can find out whether your degree entitles you to study at the university of your choice.
For some courses of study, further proof must be provided, for example via:
- Study aptitude tests/aptitude tests
- artistic aptitude tests
- completed vocational training,
- professional activities,
- voluntary services/internships.
For access to advanced courses of study (e.g. master's degree), you need a first university degree that qualifies you for a profession (e.g. bachelor's degree).
If you have foreign school-leaving qualifications, various online databases (e.g. DAAD, uni-assist, hochschulstart or ZAB) will help you to classify your foreign qualification in the German education system.
If the foreign certificate does not allow direct admission to a course of study, a subject-specific university entrance qualification can be acquired retrospectively by successfully completing years of study at a university in the home country or by taking the assessment test at a German preparatory college.
The required documents are designated by the respective university, for example:
- Application by the university (online)
- Application via hochschulstart.de (DoSV, ZV study programs)
- Application via uni-assist (for foreign certificates)
- Proof of university entrance qualification
- Other documents.
Further information can be found on the websites of the respective university.
As a rule, there are no costs for applying for a place at university. Some universities charge an enrollment fee. Information on the costs of a course of study (semester fees) can be obtained from the respective university.
Distance and online study programs are usually subject to fees. For more information, please contact the universities that offer distance and online study programs.
The respective procedure depends on the university, the study place and your personal requirements.
The legal remedies as well as the applicable deadlines are specified in the respective notices.

- If you want to study at a university, you need a university entrance qualification. The requirements for an application are usually determined by the universities. Applications for admission-restricted courses of study in the central allocation procedure, such as human medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and pharmacy, are coordinated by the Foundation for University Admission (formerly the Central Office for the Allocation of Study Places (ZVS).
