It is not possible to extend a passport. If the passport has expired, you must apply for a new passport if the passport is still required.You will find up-to-date information on the delivery time in the detailed service description.

Due to the currently very long waiting times for a passport, it is strongly recommended that you apply for the required passports at the time of planning your trip, but no later than 2 ½ months before the start of your trip.
If you need a passport at short notice, you can apply for a passport using the express procedure (see the link below: "Applying for a passport using the express procedure").
If the time for issuing an express passport (production time max. 72 hours) is also too short and it can no longer be issued in time for the first use, you can apply for a passport as a temporary passport. (see the link below: "Applying for a passport as a temporary passport"). You can find out whether this is accepted by your destination country in the travel advice from the Federal Foreign Office (see the link below "Federal Foreign Office - Travel advice").
It is not possible to extend your passport.
If your passport has expired, you must apply for a new passport if it is still required.
- a valid identity document (passport, identity card, child's identity card, child's passport),
- a current photo in passport format (45 x 35 mm), portrait format, frontal shot without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes (biometric photo),
- Your previous passport,
- your birth certificate,
- when applying for a child :
- ID of the parent/guardian present, the declaration of consent and a copy of the ID of the parent/guardian not present, proof of custody if there is only one parent/guardian.
You must come in person to apply for a passport (e-passport).
The application will be completed on the spot with the clerk. You must confirm the accuracy of the personal data and your German citizenship and provide your fingerprints.
It is not possible to renew a passport.
