Current information (as of 16.07.2024)
Due to the currently very long waiting times for a passport, it is strongly recommended that you apply for the required passports at the time of planning your trip, but no later than 2 ½ months before the start of your trip.
If you need a passport at short notice, you can apply for a passport using the express procedure (see the link below: "Applying for a passport using the express procedure").
If the time for issuing an express passport (production time max. 72 hours) is also too short and it can no longer be issued in time for the first use, you can apply for a passport as a temporary passport. (see the link below: "Applying for a passport as a temporary passport"). You can find out whether this is accepted by your destination country in the travel advice of the Federal Foreign Office (see the link below "Federal Foreign Office - Travel advice").
The application of minors must be approved in writing by both parents (as long as they have joint custody). In the case of unmarried or divorced parents, consent can be given by the parent to whom the family court has granted sole parental custody of the child. The decision of the family court must be submitted with the application. It is also possible for one parent to sign at the time of application and the other parent to sign at the time of collection in the case of minors.
From the age of 7, fingerprints must be taken for the issue of a passport for minors. This is not necessary up to the age of 6. There is a special regulation for entry into the USA. Every child up to the age of 6 must also have fingerprints in their passport. In addition, an entry permit (ESTA) must always be obtained.
- current biometric photo, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal photo without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
- a civil status certificate (birth/marriage certificate) may be required, e.g. if the spelling of the name is unclear
The applicant must appear in person to apply for a passport (e-passport). The application is completed on the spot with the processor. The applicant only has to sign.
The personal appearance is essential because of the handwritten signature on the application form and the identity check. Identity can be proven by means of an official photo ID. This is usually an identity card.
From the age of 10, the child's signature must be included on the passport.
The passport can also be collected by a person authorized in writing, who must provide proof of identity.
You cannot take your passport with you immediately after submitting your application, as it is produced at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. If the passport is needed earlier, an express passport can be applied for.
