In order to work as a "state-certified food chemist", you must apply for permission to use the professional title.

The use of the professional title "state-certified food chemist" is regulated in Germany by the individual federal states. This means that the admission to or practice of this profession is bound by legal regulations of the respective federal state to the possession of certain qualifications.

You can only work in official food monitoring with the professional title "State-certified food chemist" if you have permission to use the professional title and your qualifications therefore meet the legal requirements.

In order to obtain permission to use the professional title, you must submit an application to the competent authority.

The competent authority will examine the application. If all requirements are met, you will receive permission and may use the professional title "State-certified food chemist".

All documents must be submitted as certified copies if necessary. Further documents may be required.

A permit is issued on application to anyone who

1. has successfully completed a degree in food chemistry at a university or equivalent institution of higher education in the Federal Republic of Germany with a standard period of study of at least nine semesters,
2. after completing their studies, have received at least twelve months of practical training at an approved testing facility for official food monitoring or an institution recognized as equivalent,
3. has successfully passed the second state examination for state-certified food chemists,
4. has not been guilty of any conduct that would render him/her unreliable for practicing the profession.

Your application for permission to use the professional title should be submitted to the competent authority. For this purpose, a written, informal application must be submitted. The application documents to be submitted must be enclosed.

The competent authority will review the application. If all requirements are met, you will receive the permit and may use the professional title "State-certified food chemist".

Processing usually takes 4 weeks after receipt of the complete application documents.

There is no deadline.

An appeal against the decision may be lodged with the competent administrative court within one month of notification.
