In calves for fattening, the connective tissue end of the tail can be shortened to prevent tail tip necrosis.
The competent authority may authorize the shortening of the connective tissue end of the tail of male calves under three months of age using elastic rings.
This procedure may only be carried out in individual cases and with a temporary derogation from the competent veterinary authority. The procedure must be essential. It must therefore be checked whether a change is possible by improving the husbandry conditions.
Permission may therefore only be granted if it can be credibly demonstrated that the intervention is essential for the protection of the animals with regard to the intended use. The permit is limited in time.
The application must credibly demonstrate that the intervention is essential in the individual case. At least the following information is required:
- Confirmation that the tail tip inflammation occurs on the future owner's farm
- Confirmation of which of the following measures have been taken there to eliminate the causes of tail tip inflammation
- Reduction of the stocking density
- Improving the climate in the barn
- Increase the proportion of roughage in the feed
- Repairing or replacing damaged parts of the slatted floor
- Control of rodents
- Elimination of other defects.
The application must be accompanied by a confirmation of the accuracy of the information provided, issued by the veterinarian in charge during the fattening period.
Consequently, permission to shorten tails may not be granted unless it can be substantiated that all these husbandry improvements have been carried out.
A permit from the competent authority is required for this. This is issued at the request of the animal owner. Permission may only be granted if it can be credibly demonstrated that the intervention is essential for the protection of the animals.
The competent authority checks the application for plausibility, also by inspecting the business, and decides after receiving all the necessary documents.
The permit is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
Approx. 4 weeks after receipt of all required information. The processing time may vary depending on the scope of the examination.
- In calves for fattening, the connective tissue end of the tail can be shortened to prevent tail tip necrosis.
- This is carried out using an elastic ring to combat tail tip changes and injuries.
- (Excessive stocking densities are one of the main causes.
- Due to significantly improved husbandry conditions in cattle fattening, this is now rarely practiced.
- Nevertheless, it should not be forgotten that partial amputation reduces or even completely eliminates the natural functions of the tail for insect defense, thermoregulation and as a means of communication.
