If you or a close relative were born abroad, you can apply for a subsequent certification of the birth in the register of births (formerly the register of births) at the registry office in Germany.
There is no obligation for subsequent certification - properly issued birth certificates from abroad are generally recognized in Germany.
However, a subsequent entry in the register of births can be advantageous because the local registry office can then issue you with a German birth certificate. Any translations and certifications of the foreign certificate will therefore no longer be necessary.
- Foreign birth certificate with translation; legalization / apostille if necessary
- Valid identity card, passport or travel document
- Marriage and birth certificates of the parents of the person to whom the entry relates
- Certificate of naturalization / certificate of citizenship, if applicable
It may also be necessary to submit further documents - please enquire about this in advance at the registry office.
Subsequent certification of the birth is possible for
- German nationals
- Stateless persons, homeless foreigners and foreign refugees with habitual residence in Germany
Eligible applicants are
- the person to be registered themselves
- their parents
- their children
- the spouse or life partner
- Notarization in the register of births: EUR 90.00 to 145.00
- Birth certificate / certified printout from the register of births: EUR 15.00 (if ordered at the same time, each additional copy costs EUR 7.50)
Additional services, such as the issuing of an apostille or translations, may incur additional costs and fees.
Please call the registry office in advance for details of the procedures and documents required.
- Gather the necessary documents and visit the registry office.
- The registrar will check whether the registration can be carried out by a German registry office.
- If the requirements are met, the entry can be made in the register of births.
If required, the registry office will issue you with a birth certificate once the entry has been made in the register.
