You can stand for election to the European elections yourself. This is linked to your eligibility, among other things.

You can stand for election to the European elections under certain conditions. You must first be eligible to vote.

If you have German citizenship, you are eligible to vote if you also have German citizenship on election day. You must also be of legal age on election day. However, you are not eligible to vote if you lose your right to vote or your eligibility to vote due to a court decision or if you are not allowed to hold public office.

If you are a citizen of the European Union, you are eligible to vote if you have a residence or habitual abode in Germany. You must also be a citizen of a member state of the European Union and at least 18 years old on election day. You lose your eligibility to vote if you have been disqualified from voting in Germany or your country of origin or if your eligibility has been revoked by a court decision. You are also ineligible if you are not allowed to hold public office in Germany due to a court decision.

You are eligible to vote if

• you are a German national or a national of a member state of the European Union and
• have reached the age of 18.

In addition, you must not be disqualified from voting.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the competent authority is the municipal administration in the municipalities without administrative boundaries, the municipal administration in the towns and the district administration in the districts.

  • German or EU citizenship on election day
  • at least 18 years old
  • as a citizen of a member state of the European Union with residence in Germany or habitual residence in Germany
• not eligible if you are a German citizen, if:
  • excluded from the right to vote or
  • not eligible by court decision or not qualified to hold public office,
• Citizens of the Union are not eligible if:
  • excluded from the right to vote in Germany or
  • excluded from the right to vote in their country of origin or
  • is ineligible or unable to hold public office in Germany as a result of a court decision, or
  • has lost the right to stand for election in their country of origin due to a civil or criminal court decision
• competent: Courts, country of origin, mayor

In municipalities belonging to the district, the heads of the district and for the other municipalities the mayors.

Municipal electoral authority

In the European elections, each candidate must enclose a certificate of eligibility from the competent municipal authority with the nomination:

• Certificate of eligibility for Germans - Annex 16 to Section 32 (4) no. 2 of the European Electoral Regulations
• Certificate of eligibility for Union citizens - Annex 16A to Section 32(4)(2a) of the European Electoral Regulations).

EU citizens must also submit an affidavit in lieu of an oath with further personal details (Annex 16B to Section 32 (4) no. 2b of the European Electoral Regulations).
