The certificate of marriageability is issued if it is required for marriage abroad.
It is issued for German citizens with residence or habitual abode abroad, by the registry office 1 in Berlin.
If you wish to marry abroad, it may be that there is a legal standard in the intended country of marriage which requires the presentation of such a certificate.
The responsibility for issuing a certificate of marriageability for this group of persons (German citizens with residence or habitual abode abroad) is located at Standesamt 1 in Berlin.
- The requirements, type and format of the evidence to be provided and the examination of the prerequisites for marriage are governed by German law, as is the case for a German citizen.
- Evidence must be provided by means of public documents:
- The civil status
- The place of residence, habitual abode
- The nationality
- As well as, if applicable, the last marriages and/or civil partnerships and their dissolutions
- The person must have German citizenship.
- You must have your domicile and habitual residence abroad
- The intended marriage is to take place abroad
- The intended marriage must not be prevented by any reason according to German law.

If the examination shows that the intended marriage does not preclude a marriage obstacle under German law and the necessary information on the person of both spouses is provided, the registry office shall issue the certificate of matrimonial capacity applied for.
After issuance, the certificate of matrimonial capacity is valid for a period of six months.
