You can obtain a residence permit for an EU study-related internship if you meet certain requirements.
You can obtain a residence permit for a study-related EU internship if you have obtained a university degree in the two years prior to submitting your application or are still studying in a third country that leads to a university degree. A higher education institution is any educational institution that offers a degree that is comparable to a higher education degree that could be obtained in Germany. In this regard, the assessment recommendations of the Central Office for Foreign Education must be taken into account, see further information.
If you have not yet reached the age of 18, the person with parental responsibility must agree to your planned stay for the purpose of the study-related internship.
The residence permit for a study-related internship is a temporary residence permit. It is issued for the agreed duration of the internship, but for a maximum of six months.

- The purpose of the internship is for you to acquire knowledge, practical skills and experience in a professional environment.
- You are currently studying in a third country or have successfully completed your studies no more than two years before submitting your application.
- The internship corresponds to your university degree or course of study.
- The host institution undertakes to bear the costs incurred by public authorities for up to six months after the end of the internship agreement for the foreigner's living expenses during the unauthorized stay in Germany and for deportation.
- Their livelihood is secured for the entire duration of the study-related internship.

Under certain conditions, a fee reduction or fee exemption may be possible.
You must apply for a residence permit at the foreigners authority responsible for your place of residence. The procedure is as follows:
- Depending on the foreigners authority and your request, it may be possible to apply via the Internet. Find out whether your foreigners authority offers electronic applications for residence permits.
- If you can only apply in person, make an appointment with the immigration office. During the appointment, your application will be accepted and your supporting documents checked (bring these with you to the appointment). Your fingerprints will be taken for the production of an electronic residence permit (eAT card).
- In the case of an electronic application, the Immigration Office will contact you after receiving your online application to arrange an appointment at the Immigration Office if necessary. - If your application is approved, the Foreigners' Registration Office will arrange for the eAT card to be issued.
