If you are a student, you must take out health insurance - either through family insurance or independently.

Students must prove that they have health insurance when they enrol for their studies. Even if they do not live in Germany.

Health insurance is also compulsory for periods of work experience completed during the course of study.

As a rule, students can be insured through their parents in a statutory health insurance fund free of charge, provided that one parent is a member of a statutory health insurance fund. However, family insurance is only possible up to the age of 25.

For students who are married or in a registered civil partnership, family insurance is possible via the spouse or civil partner if they are insured in statutory health insurance.

If health insurance through the parents or partner is not possible, statutory health insurance companies or private health insurance companies offer reduced premiums.

• Age limit for family insurance: 25 years of age
• After expiry of the family insurance, it may be possible to take out student health insurance.

Students are obliged to take out insurance until they reach the age of thirty. This period is extended in exceptional cases.

• Students can be insured in the statutory health insurance scheme through their parents until they reach the age of 25
• Family insurance through a spouse or partner is also possible

The responsibility lies with the health insurance companies.
