What is funded?
The state provides grants for projects for the sustainable development of water bodies and their banks and lowland areas as well as for flood and coastal protection, water protection and water management projects that cannot be carried out or cannot be carried out to the necessary extent without a grant. The aim of the funding is to achieve environmentally compatible management of water resources by improving water management infrastructure and flood protection as a contribution to the sustainable development of rural areas.
In particular, investment and conceptual projects for near-natural watercourse development on flowing and standing waters, investment projects for flood protection and flood prevention, investment projects for groundwater protection, for securing the drinking water supply and for advanced wastewater treatment are funded.
Who is eligible for funding?
Recipients of funding can be legal entities under public law, with the exception of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as natural persons and legal entities under private law, provided they are the sponsors of eligible projects.
How is funding provided?
- Development of running waters 90 percent
- Development of standing waters 100 percent
- Flood protection 80 percent
- Coastal protection up to 95 percent
- Groundwater protection up to 90 percent
- Quality assurance for drinking water, advanced wastewater treatment up to 70 percent
For conceptual water development projects, the amount of the grant depends on the projects with which they are associated.
For the selection procedure:

For the application procedure:
- the completed application form
- explanatory report
- Cost estimate, offers
- Maps, site plans (for sub-projects with presentation of the overall project)

The following requirements must be met:
- A project can only be funded if the objectives of the Water Framework Directive, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the Flood Risk Management Directive are taken into account and the project is in line with the plans and concepts of the state.
- The overall financing must be secured.
- The project must not have been started.
A selection procedure is carried out for funding applications in accordance with predetermined project selection criteria. As a result, all projects intended for funding are included in project lists.
The funding applications for these projects must then be specified and completed. This is followed by the approval procedure, payment procedure and proof of use procedure. An application for early commencement of the project without prejudice to funding can be submitted prior to approval.
The funding application for an investment project must be submitted by April 30 of the previous year.
The funding application for a conceptual project can be submitted at any time. The concepts are selected for funding on February 28 and August 31.
The respective State Office for Agriculture and the Environment is the appeal body as the approval authority; complaints must be lodged with the competent administrative court.
