Protected biotopes are habitats of plant and animal species that are particularly worthy of protection. These habitats deserve special protection because they are rare, have a high ecological value and/or are threatened with destruction.
Protected biotopes are habitats of plant and animal species that are particularly worthy of protection. These habitats deserve special protection because they are rare, have a high ecological value and/or are threatened with destruction.
Geotopes are often particularly striking formations of inanimate nature that provide insights into the history of the earth, including the origin and development of life on earth.
There are laws and international agreements to protect these habitats. In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the following biotope types and geotopes are under special legal protection:
Biotopes:
- Near-natural moors and marshes, swamps, reed beds and reeds, wet meadows rich in sedges and rushes,
- near-natural and unobstructed sections of streams and rivers, spring areas, oxbow lakes, peat bogs and small standing bodies of water, including the riparian vegetation, siltation areas of standing bodies of water,
- Dwarf shrub and juniper heaths, dry and nutrient-poor grasslands as well as abandoned chalk quarries, semi-natural swamp, marsh and riparian forests, bushes and forests in dry and warm locations, copses and field hedges.
Geotopes:
- Erratic blocks, boulder packs, rocky outcrops and oser,
- dry valleys and calcareous tufa deposits,
- open inland dunes and cliff-edge dunes,
- cliffs and hooks.
all documents or evidence that justify an exception to biotope or geotope protection
On application, the lower nature conservation authority may allow exceptions to statutory protection in individual cases if the impairment of the biotopes or geotopes can be compensated for or the measure is necessary for overriding reasons of public interest. More detailed regulations can be found in the listed laws or can be obtained from the responsible lower nature conservation authorities in individual cases.
