From 01.01.2020, parents can have their children cared for free of charge in crèches, kindergartens, after-school care or child day care.
The term "daycare center" only includes care and support in a daycare facility (crèche, kindergarten, after-school care). However, child day care is also an important form of support for children up to the age of three and sometimes beyond. In summary, we therefore speak of child day care facilities (also KiTa - day care facilities and child day care).
The placement of a childcare place in a child day care facility (child day care, crèche, kindergarten, after-school care) takes place in cooperation with the responsible local youth welfare organization (the youth welfare office).
Parents should find out as early as possible from the child day care facility, the child day care provider or the youth welfare office whether there are any free childcare places in the facility of their choice.
From the age of one, children who are habitually resident in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern until they start school (crèche, kindergarten or day care) are entitled to 30 hours of day care per week. This is part-time support. Parents are free to make use of a shorter care period of 20 hours per week. If parents require a higher level of childcare, for example due to their job, they can apply to the relevant youth welfare office for full-day support of 50 hours per week. In after-school care, full-day support is provided for up to 6 hours a day from Monday to Friday and part-time support for up to three hours a day. This also applies during vacation periods.
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the costs of child day care are largely borne by the state, the districts and independent towns, as well as the parents' municipalities of residence. As of 01.01. 2020, parents with their usual place of residence in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are exempt from paying parental contributions for child day care. They will only be responsible for the costs of meals or additional requirements due to longer stays at the facility. Until the end of 2018, parents will benefit from parental relief for the first child or an only child. From the second child onwards, parents are already exempt from paying contributions.

Parents should find out about available childcare places as early as possible. To do this, you can contact the responsible youth welfare office or the specialist youth service or the desired childminder or daycare facility directly. Every child in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is entitled to part-time support from the age of one. Funding for younger children is also possible after consultation with the responsible youth welfare office or the specialist youth service.
If parents require more than 30 hours per week, they can apply to the responsible youth welfare office or youth welfare department for full-time support (up to 50 hours per week in crèches, kindergartens or child day care; 6 hours per day from Monday to Friday in after-school care).
