Teaser

If you would like to travel abroad with your pet (dog, cat, ferret), there are a number of requirements to consider.

Volltext

The EU pet passport is a necessary travel document for dogs, cats and ferrets when traveling with pets within the European Union (EU) and to third countries. It contains the following information, among others:

  • Details of the owner of the animal
  • Details of the animal (name, breed, sex, date of birth, description)
  • Identification of the animal (transponder/microchip/chip number, type and date of identification)
  • Rabies vaccination (validity)
  • If necessary: Confirmation of a sufficient rabies antibody titration test result (as proof of the effectiveness of the rabies vaccination if travel to non-listed third countries is intended)
  • Further vaccinations or treatments, for example against echinococcus.

You can obtain the EU pet passport from authorized veterinary practices. Almost all practising vets who treat pets are authorized to issue pet passports.

Even if you are not planning to travel with your pet, you can have a pet passport issued, as all vaccinations can also be entered there and a separate vaccination certificate is no longer necessary.

Notes:

  • Since December 29, 2014, only pet passports that comply with the new requirements of Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 577/2013 may be used for the first issue.
  • The "old" pet passports issued before December 29, 2014 in accordance with the model of Decision 2003/803/EC remain valid.
  • Please check the conditions for travel from the EU to third countries or other member states with your local veterinarian or competent authority in good time before traveling.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • EU standardized pet passport template in accordance with Implementing Regulation (EU) No. 577/2013: This template is usually available to any veterinarian who is authorized to issue the pet passport.
  • If applicable, the animal's vaccination certificate (national yellow vaccination certificate) to have any vaccinations already given transferred to the pet passport

Voraussetzungen

Before the EU pet passport can be issued by your vet, your pet must be clearly identified by the vet. This can be done by reading the transponder. If your dog, cat or ferret does not yet have a transponder, your vet will have it identified.

Identification with a transponder is always carried out before the EU pet passport is issued. The identification details are secured by laminating the corresponding page in the EU pet passport.

You confirm the details of the pet owner in the EU pet passport with your signature.

The EU pet passport also contains the contact details of the authorized veterinarian who issued the EU pet passport.

Kosten

The costs for the EU pet passport are calculated according to the current scale of veterinary fees and can vary depending on whether or not the animal still needs to be identified and/or vaccinated. The costs depend on the service provided by the vet and are based on the scale of veterinary fees (GOT).

Verfahrensablauf

If you want to have an EU pet passport issued for your pet (dog, cat, ferret):

  • Make an appointment with your vet in advance.
  • Your vet will clearly identify your pet by reading the transponder.
  • If your pet has not yet been identified with a transponder, your vet will do this for you.
  • If necessary, your pet will also be vaccinated.
  • The EU pet passport can now be issued with the relevant entries.

Bearbeitungsdauer

Depending on the individual case. The EU pet passport can often be issued immediately after the animal has been identified using a transponder and subsequently vaccinated against rabies.

Frist

There are no deadlines for issuing an EU pet passport. Deadlines may need to be observed for subsequent travel abroad. Please contact your local veterinarian or your local authority in this regard.

Hinweise

Please find out about the conditions for traveling from the EU to third countries or other member states from your local veterinarian or competent authority in good time before you travel.
The veterinary and food inspection offices of the districts and independent cities are responsible.

If you want to travel with more than five animals (dogs, cats or ferrets) or are planning to sell or buy an animal abroad, the requirements for commercial movement apply.
