After an appropriate age rating, the films and computer games may only be made available to children and young people in accordance with their age rating. The Federal Review Board for Media Harmful to Young People (BPjM) can index films, games, books and Internet pages if they contain content that is harmful to young people. This is to prevent children and young people from gaining access to these media. Indexing by the BPjM includes, among other things, advertising and marketing restrictions.
Telemedia are not subject to review by the USK and FSK. Telemedia includes all online offers that can be accessed on the Internet, telebanking, e-mails, teleshopping, video streaming or video on demand, downloading computer games, teletext, radio text, etc.
The Commission for the Protection of Minors in the Media (KJM) is responsible for reviewing and assessing telemedia offerings with regard to the protection of minors. In accordance with the Interstate Treaty on the Protection of Minors in the Media (JMStV), it is responsible for supervising private broadcasters and telemedia providers based in Germany.
The age marking of films and computer games is carried out by self-control before the game or film is published and distributed.
