To obtain a fishing license for life, anglers / sport fishermen are required to take a corresponding skills test (fishing license test).
The examination covers the subjects of general fish knowledge, special fish knowledge, water knowledge, fishing gear knowledge and legal knowledge. The examination lasts 90 minutes and 60 questions (12 questions per subject area) are asked using the multiple-choice method (three possible answers per question - one answer must be marked with a cross). The candidate who has answered at least six questions per complex and a total of at least 45 questions correctly has passed the examination.
Written application - this is available from the competent authorities or can also be downloaded from the website of the upper fisheries authority.
Participation in the examination must be arranged with the relevant examination authority in compliance with the registration deadline (7 days).
A declaration of consent from a parent is required for underage participants.
The examination is subject to a fee:
- for persons over 18 years: EUR 25.00
- for persons under 18 years: EUR 15.00.

For candidates with reading disabilities (LRS), the examination authority can set separate examination dates, during which the questions and answer options are read aloud to these candidates by a supervising person. Proof of the examinee's disability must be provided to the examination authority by a public health officer.
If a candidate does not speak German, the examination authority may, in individual cases, call in an officially appointed interpreter at the applicant's expense (bilingual questionnaires are used for candidates who speak Russian).
Persons from other federal states who intend to take part in a fishing license examination in M-V should consult the responsible fishing authority in their home country beforehand. As some federal states have different fishing regulations for participation in examinations and preparatory courses, it is not possible to obtain a fishing license in every federal state with an examination certificate from the state of M-V without further ado.

The local regulatory authorities of the offices and independent municipalities are responsible for carrying out the fishing license examination. There is freedom of movement, citizens can register with any of the authorities for one of the examination dates.
