Gewässer-Überwachung

According to Article 8 of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and other reporting requirements, investigation and measurement programs must be implemented for the monitoring of water bodies to provide a coherent and comprehensive overview of the state of the country's lakes.

An important prerequisite for the correct assessment of the overall situation of standing waters is the availability of current morphometric data from lake surveys (depth ratios, lake basin morphometry), as well as information on the catchment area (size, geology, soils, use). If available, legacy data and historical maps are included in the assessment.

No fees are charged for the provision of data from the M-V Lakes Program.

Services to be provided by the County in connection with the survey and measurement program are:

• At least six sampling-related visits to the lakes to be studied per year (probe measurements, collection of water samples for chemical and biological analyses),
• Recording the species composition and characteristics of the plankton and aquatic plants (macrophytes) and the diatoms attached to them, which are important for classification, and - as soon as suitable assessment methods are available - also of the bottom-dwelling small animals (macrozoobenthos) and fish fauna.
  

In addition, the lake sediments are examined for bound pollutants, heavy metals and nutrients.

Finally, the ecological status of the lakes is assessed by evaluating the measurement results.

Generally, the results of a study year are available to the public after completion of the chemical and biological analyses and overall assessment of the lake in question beginning in March of the following year.
