The supreme school authority is responsible for the technical supervision of the school boards and the supervision of the school councils. It is also responsible for the legal supervision of the districts and independent towns.

There are four state education authorities in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. They are located in Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, Rostock and Schwerin.

The school authorities are responsible for the schools in their respective catchment areas.

Tasks of the school authorities:

• Professional supervision of teaching and education in schools
• Supervision of teachers and staff with special educational responsibilities
• Legal supervision of the administrative districts and independent cities as school authorities
• Exercise of approval and decision-making powers
• Supervision of the school psychological service
• Technical supervision of the administrative districts and independent cities as responsible bodies for school development planning
