The elementary school is followed by the two-year orientation level, which is independent of the type of school. This form of orientation for later courses of education usually takes place at regional schools and comprehensive schools as part of longer joint learning. Exceptions are sports and music grammar schools and classes for the gifted.
In the orientation stage, observation, support and testing make it easier for pupils to identify their areas of interest and learning opportunities, as well as the choice of subsequent courses of education from year 7 onwards. Shared learning and individual support are the key points in the orientation stage, which is independent of the type of school.
The class conference in year 6 discusses and decides on all matters relating to the school career recommendation. At the end of the first semester of year 6, a written school career recommendation is issued, on the basis of which the choice of further education courses is made after appropriate consultation with the parents/guardians.
If the parents/guardians decide to attend a grammar school, contrary to the school career recommendation, the first semester of year 7 is considered a probationary period. If the probationary period is not successfully completed, the student must leave this course of education.
In order to promote special abilities and interests, pupils can be admitted to classes for highly gifted pupils at a selected grammar school in each school district from year 5 onwards. Admission is decided by a committee, which takes into account the pupil's knowledge and abilities (subject, methodological, personal and social skills) and other current reports or findings in addition to the school psychologist's findings.
In the case of special musical or sporting abilities, pupils can attend special sports and music grammar schools from year 5 onwards after their aptitude has been assessed.
