The following applies as your main residence:
- If you are married or living in a civil partnership: the home you both primarily use. This also applies if you are only living apart temporarily.
- If you are married or in a civil partnership and live apart permanently: Your predominantly used home.
- If you are a minor: the home mainly used by your parents or foster parents. If they live separately, the main residence is the home you mainly live in.
- If you cannot clearly determine the home you mainly use: Your home in which you have the center of your life.
- If you have several homes in Germany, your main home is the home you mainly use.
To register your new main residence, you must visit the registration office responsible for you in person or have someone authorized by you do so. You can also register your new home online under certain conditions.

- when moving into a rented property: confirmation from the landlord or corresponding allocation feature

- if represented by another person: written power of attorney and identification documents of the person to be registered, if applicable
- if moving from abroad: last residential address in Germany
- for spouses, life partners and family members with the same move dates: Date of moving in as well as previous and current residences
- The competent authority may request the submission of further documents to verify the information (e.g.: marriage certificate, birth certificate).
- You have moved into a new apartment in Germany.
The following requirements apply to the online service:
- You are of legal age.
- You are not married and do not have a registered civil partnership.
- You are moving into your new home without underage children.
- You have a valid ID card or a valid eID card with activated online ID function and personal identification number (PIN).
- You have an NFC-enabled smartphone or a USB card reader.
- You have installed the ID card app2 on your smartphone.
- You have an M-V user account.
You appear in person at the registration office responsible for you or are represented by a person with power of attorney if necessary:
- You confirm by signature that the personal data requested by the registration authority from the previous competent registration authority is correct.
- You submit all the necessary documents.
- Finally, you will receive an official confirmation of registration of your residence from the registration authority.
For electronic residence registration:
- You call up the online service.
- You log in to the online service with your user account.
- You enter all the required data online and submit the form online.
- You will receive a code by post to the address of your new home.
- You confirm that you are moving into your new home by entering the code in the online service.
- Finally, you will receive your electronic registration confirmation and the address sticker by post to update your personal ID card.

- As a general rule, every apartment must be registered with the relevant registration office at the new place of residence within 2 weeks of moving in.
- The main residence is the predominantly used apartment if more than one apartment is occupied.
