Religious education is compulsory.

If pupils do not wish to attend, they must deregister and then attend ethics lessons from grade 5 onwards.

Note: The school may consider re-enrolment for religious education for the next school term.

Pupils must provide reasons of faith and conscience that prevent them from participating in religious education.

Parents or pupils must declare in writing that they are withdrawing from religious education. The declaration is handed in to the school administration. Depending on age:

• before the 12th birthday:
  both parents must sign the declaration
  .
• after the 12th birthday and before the 14th birthday: in
  addition to the signature of both parents, the pupil must expressly agree to deregister with the school administration. From this age, pupils may not be educated in another confession against their will. Nor can their parents deregister them against their will.
  
• after the 14th and before the 18th birthday:
  The pupil must sign the declaration. The parents must be invited to the handover appointment at the school administration.
  

In addition to the signatures of the parents or your signature, the declaration must contain the following information:

• Name
• Class
• Date

No later than two weeks after the start of the school semester

In Baden-Württemberg, pupils at public schools can attend Protestant or Catholic religious education and, at individual locations, Old Catholic religious education

• old Catholic,
• jewish,
• syrian Orthodox,
• orthodox,
• alevi religious education and
• and Sunni Islamic religious education

attend.
