As the parent/guardian of a child in year 4, you decide during the school year which type of secondary school your child should attend for the next school year.
After the primary school recommendation has been issued, you can take advantage of additional counselling from a counselling teacher. Counselling is voluntary and subject to confidentiality.
- Parents/guardians must provide feedback on the special counselling procedure to the primary school no later than the fourth school day after receiving the primary school recommendation on a form that parents/guardians receive with the primary school recommendation.
- A specially trained and qualified counselling teacher offers the parents/guardians an appointment for a counselling session. In this meeting, concerns and questions are worked out together with the parents/guardians. It is possible that the main parental concerns will already be clarified in this counselling session and the counselling is concluded. It may be useful to obtain further information about your child's performance profile. In this case, the counsellor will suggest that you carry out a test with your child on an additional date. All parents/guardians must agree to this. The procedures used and the form of testing (individual or group testing) will be determined by the counselling teacher based on the questions posed by the parents/guardians. The focus can be on aptitude, motivation or other aspects.
In a feedback meeting, the diagnostic results (e.g. test and questionnaire results, observations, interview information) are reflected on together with the parents with regard to the parents' concerns.
Even after the special counselling process, the decision on the choice of school is left to you as a parent or guardian.
The special consultation procedure must be completed by 22 March 2024 at the latest.
You must register for the special counselling procedure no later than four school days after receiving the primary school recommendation if you wish to take part.
The special counselling procedure is often used when your own ideas about the type of secondary school do not match the primary school recommendation and aspects for and against a particular type of school need to be weighed up again in relation to your child's strengths and weaknesses.
Note: Counselling teachers are subject to a duty of confidentiality. This means that the content of the counselling sessions and the results of test procedures will not be passed on to third parties unless you give your express written consent.
No formal appeal can be lodged against the primary school recommendation and the special counselling procedure.
