If your severely disabled person's ID card is temporary and you wish to continue using it, you can have it extended.
Temporary ID cards are valid for a maximum of five years. The period of validity is calculated from the month of issue. It is also possible to extend the ID card for a maximum of five years.
The following time limits apply to children and young people:
- under the age of 10: The ID card is valid until the end of the calendar month in which the child turns 10 at the latest.
- between 10 and 15 years of age: The ID card is valid until the end of the calendar month in which the child turns 20 at the latest.
If you do not have German citizenship and your residence permit or work permit is limited in time, the ID card is valid until the end of the month in which the time limit expires at the latest.
If no significant change in your health situation is to be expected, you can obtain a permanent permit.

You can apply informally to the relevant office to renew your severely disabled person's ID card.
If you already have an ID card in cheque card format, you will receive a new ID card with the relevant change.
The responsible office will inform you about the further procedure and the expected processing time.
