A laying hen house may only place eggs on the market if it is registered and has marked the eggs with its registration number.
Since January 1, 2004, only eggs from a laying hen house for which a registration number (producer code) has been assigned and which are marked with this corresponding producer code may be placed on the market (exception: direct marketing).
The following are subject to registration:
- Businesses that keep 350 or more laying hens or
- Companies that keep fewer than 350 hens but market their eggs subject to mandatory labeling.
If fewer than 350 hens are kept and the eggs are sold unmarked and unsorted directly to the end consumer on the farm or at the door (direct marketing), there is no obligation to register.
Please note: Producers who market their eggs at the weekly market are subject to registration.
