Personalities who have rendered outstanding services to a municipality / city can be honored with an award.
Personalities who have rendered outstanding services to a community can be honored with an award. The achievements to be honored can be very different. They can be economic, local political, social or artistic achievements.
The awarding of honorary citizenship is traditionally a particularly prominent way of being honored by the municipality. As this is a personal right, it can only be awarded to natural persons who are still alive.
Special rights and obligations or even privileges are not associated with the award of honorary citizenship.
Cities and municipalities can define further possibilities for event-related honors in their statutes and, for example, award specially made medals, pins, coat of arms plates or rings of honor.
In addition to municipal statutes, procedures for the awarding of state honors and medals can be initiated by the municipality. These include the Schleswig-Holstein Medal, honorary state citizenship, the Stark Prize or the Roll of Honor and, last but not least, the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
