Schleswig-Holstein is a land of water: 30,000 kilometers of streams and rivers, 300 lakes with a total surface area of 28,000 hectares, around 1,200 km of coastline on the North and Baltic Seas. Almost a quarter of the state's surface area is at risk from storm surges and 100 percent of the population's water supply comes from groundwater. The protection and preservation of water bodies as habitats and drinking water reservoirs are important tasks.
If measures are required to avert a water hazard caused by flooding, storm surges, ice or other events, all municipalities must provide the necessary assistance if ordered to do so by the hazard prevention authority, even if they are not under threat.
Further information on water management and an overview of the addresses of the responsible authorities can be found on the state portal "Agriculture and Environment Schleswig-Holstein".
