In the case of deaths in hospitals, retirement and nursing homes and similar institutions, the obligation to report the death lies with the institution's owner. Otherwise, the following persons are obliged to report a death in the following order:

• Any person who lived with the deceased in the same household,
• the person in whose home the death occurred,
• any other person who was present at the death or who is aware of the death from their own knowledge.

The last group of cases also includes morticians, who usually take over the notification after the clinics.

• Marriage or civil partnership certificate of the last marriage or civil partnership and, if applicable, proof of its dissolution,
• Birth certificate if there was no marriage or civil partnership,
• proof of last place of residence and
• medical certificate of death.

A death must be reported no later than the third working day following the death.

To the municipal, local or city administration (registry office) in whose area of responsibility the death occurred.
