The task of data protection is to protect individuals from having their right to informational self-determination impaired by the use of their personal data.

Technological progress is enabling ever faster and more extensive collection of personal data. Both public authorities and the private sector process a great deal of information about applicants and their customers. Name, address and birth data are stored as well as information on purchasing behavior or income. For you as a citizen, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep track of who is storing data about you, what information is involved and whether this data processing is permitted.

The task of data protection is to protect individuals from having their right to informational self-determination impaired by the use of their personal data.

In the public sector, the right to informational self-determination acts as a right of defense against the state and offers protection against unauthorized processing of your data by state and municipal authorities. The independent control of public authorities in Schleswig-Holstein is guaranteed by the Independent State Center for Data Protection.

In the non-public sector, the right to informational self-determination offers protection against unauthorized processing of your data by all bodies that are not part of the public sector, for example commercial enterprises, freelancers and associations. The independent monitoring of non-public bodies in Schleswig-Holstein is also guaranteed by the Independent State Center for Data Protection.
