In order to protect nature and the landscape, parts of it can be declared protected areas.

In order to protect nature and the landscape, parts of it can be declared a nature reserve, biosphere reserve, landscape conservation area, nature park, natural monument or protected landscape feature in accordance with the provisions of the State Nature Conservation Act.
The nature reserve is the strictest of these protection categories.

The declaration as a protected area defines the object of protection, the purpose of protection and the requirements and prohibitions necessary to achieve the purpose of protection. It contains the maintenance, development or restoration measures where necessary.

In addition to the protected areas under state and federal law, Schleswig-Holstein also has a Europe-wide network of Natura 2000 sites. The NATURA 2000 areas are protected areas under the Habitats Directive (Fauna-Flora-Habitat) and the Birds Directive of the European Union.
