Dead animals and certain animal parts must be disposed of in a specialized rendering plant.

Dead animals (domestic animals, pets, zoo animals, circus animals and, under special circumstances, wild animals) and certain waste of animal origin, such as slaughterhouse waste or food waste from restaurants or commercial kitchens, must be disposed of properly.

The harmless disposal of these animal carcasses and waste is an important part of animal disease control and public health care and is carried out by the districts/counties. Only through effective treatment is it possible to render harmless recognized or unrecognized pathogens of diseases in animal carcasses or their parts. Therefore, dead animals and certain animal parts must be properly disposed of in a specialized rendering plant. Kitchen and catering waste from restaurants and commercial kitchens that contain animal components (e.g. meat scraps, sausage) are also subject to disposal in accordance with European legislation.

Under no circumstances do dead animals belong in the organic waste garbage can or on the compost heap.

If you have your own property and it is not located in a water catchment area, you may also bury your pet on your property. The animal's body must be covered by a layer of soil at least 50 cm thick.

Have you found a dead pet? If the animal is on your own property, you as the property owner must dispose of the animal. If the animal is in public traffic areas, please contact the local regulatory authority.

Charges and fees are levied for the disposal of dead animals and animal waste. Costs are also incurred if dead pets are disposed of in specialized facilities. Detailed information on this can be obtained from the responsible office.
