Act on the Protection of Cultural Monuments (Monument Protection Act - DSchG)
Archaeological monuments - like architectural monuments - are part of our country's cultural heritage. This must be preserved and protected.
The archaeological heritage includes both visible monuments, such as burial mounds, castles, terps, dykes and ramparts, as well as the material remains of our ancestors, such as tools, weapons and jewelry. Archaeological monuments are usually hidden in the ground and only visible to the trained eye. There is a risk of archaeological monuments being destroyed as a result of intensive soil intervention (e.g. road construction, gravel extraction, building development).
Every citizen can contribute to the results of archaeological research, which are reflected in museum exhibitions, by keeping an eye out for archaeological finds or monuments and reporting them to the relevant authority.
Further training events are offered on the search for finds. In addition, the responsible office provides support in the compilation of local chronicles, the identification of finds and general advice for citizens on archaeological matters. In addition, the responsible office offers construction companies investigations prior to necessary ground interventions so that they can plan their construction projects with a high degree of certainty.
The responsible office provides find report forms which are used for the systematic, central recording of finds.
