The rescue service is a public task of the districts and independent cities with the aim of ensuring that the population is provided with emergency rescue and ambulance services in a needs-based and efficient manner.

Emergency rescue:
Emergency rescue comprises the medical care of emergency patients by specially qualified personnel and transportation in specially equipped ambulances to a treatment facility suitable for further care.

Patient transportation:
Ambulance transport is the transportation of other sick, injured or needy persons who require specialist medical care or the special facilities of an ambulance during transportation or for whom this is to be expected due to their condition.

Air rescue:
Air rescue supplements and supports the ground-based rescue service, particularly in emergency rescue and transfers to other treatment facilities.

For the purpose of billing the statutory health insurance companies: medical prescription.

This medical prescription can also be issued by the emergency doctors in the event of an emergency rescue or replaced by a confirmation of transportation from the hospital.

• The user fees agreed between the health insurance funds and each municipal rescue service provider must be paid; in the case of air rescue, the fees agreed with the air rescue companies must be paid.
• In the case of persons with statutory health insurance, the health insurance fund covers the costs of care by emergency doctors, the ambulance ride to the hospital and patient transportation required for compelling medical reasons in accordance with the provisions of SGB V (except for the co-payment in accordance with § 61 SGB V amounting to a maximum of EUR 10.00).
